Problems of Subject Raising Constructions among Yoruba ESL Learners

Raising is an upward movement that concerns structures whose derivation involves copy, merger, and deletion operations in the Minimalist Program. The proficiency of Yorùbá ESL learners speakers English hindered as a result interference from mother tongue divergence raising constructions. Thus, this study examines subject-raising constructions to explicate root cause problem extent which could be affected. Chomsky’s copy-theory adopted theoretical framework. Data for both languages are drawn syntax literature. data supported with introspection. Different types subject such subject-to-subject, object-to-subject clause position carefully studied.
 This discovers different what permitted Yorùbá. A raised element often leaves behind presumptive pronoun convergence. While non-finite structure English, allows finite clause. Therefore, especially raising, not easy due language variations. forced avoid or misapply their LI knowledge on similar construction language. It concluded teachers should aware these areas difficulties effective teaching learning processes.
